Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap Towards Decommissioning

On June 12, 2015, we reviewed the Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap to outline the decommissioning schedule of the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station.

Mid-and-Long-Term Roadmap Towards Decommissioning

Second-stage Major Initiatives

From Emphasizing Speed To Reducing Risk

Before the revision, we tended to especially focus on setting a speedy schedule but as a result it brought a burden to the work site and each time a new incident was found, it incurred a change in the schedule. From here on, each risk is consistently lowered in the long-run; we prioritize situations and proceed safety with work.

Prioritizing Situations By Responding To The Cause Of The Risks

As for the radioactive materials which could be the cause of the risks, each present situation is prioritized in the following 3 basic categories and the most appropriate strategy is implemented.

Situations that are relatively high risk, high priority
Applies to fuels in the spent fuel pools of the buildings affected by highly contaminated water and hydrogen explosion etc.
Situations that might actually increase risks if handled hastily
Applies to fuel debris.
Situations that should be treated properly in the decommissioning process even though risks might not increase in the future
Applies to solid waste and secondary waste products from water treatments.

Other Implementation Tasks

  • Stabilization Of Nuclear Reactors
  • Results Of Radioactive Analysis Around The Premises
  • Results Of Daily Radioactive Analysis On The Premises
